At the end of the 2013/14 we had a whole patch of lawn infested by some coarse long grass having long surface suckers. We tried digging these out but the roots were deep and the grass promptly grew back.
So I painted the leaves of the coarse grass with Roundup (called Glyphosate in Thailand) as this will kill the roots. Quite a bit got spilled on the surrounding grass so I ended up with lots of brown patches. After mowing the dead areas a couple of times the dead grasses and roots were gone.
Then I spread liberal amounts of wormcast to encourage new growth and then just left it through the rainy season, by the end of which the ordinary grass had more or less grown back with no sign of the tough coarse grass.
